– Unless stated otherwise, recommendations from activities in which the recommender and the candidate participated together (community and even sports/recreation) are acceptable (especially if it seems that the two had intensive experiences together) though often less effective than work-related recommendations.
– Recent relationships are better than "old" relationships.
– A recommendation from the current workplace is often a must. If the candidate can't bring one, they usually need to add a note explaining why. However, It is not recommended to use more than one recommendation from the same workplace.
– A recommendation from a professor is usually not recommended unless you worked for him – he was your boss (for example, as teaching assistant). However, note that a few schools actually REQUIRE a recommendation from a professor.
